The Union Health Ministry released an official statement explaining their decision:
“Taking into consideration, the recent incidents of allegations regarding the integrity of certain competitive examinations, the Ministry of Health has decided to undertake a thorough assessment of the robustness of the processes of the NEET PG Entrance Examination, conducted by the National Board of Examinations for medical students. It has accordingly been decided, as a precautionary measure, to postpone the NEET PG Entrance Examination, scheduled to be held tomorrow, June 23, 2024. The Ministry also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to the NEET PG candidates, emphasizing that the decision was made in the best interests of the students and to maintain the sanctity of the examination process.
Reactions from the Medical Community:
The abrupt decision has sparked outrage among doctors and NEET PG candidates. Dr. Manish Jangra, founder of FAIMA, voiced his dismay:
“Many students had booked hotels, and flights. The government has wasted its precious time. The integrity of the government is definitely in question, with such moves showing that the government is incapable of conducting an exam planned so many months ago. Many students wanted to join jobs after the exam to survive this phase. Now they are stuck. Very sad to hear this.”
Personal Stories of Struggle:
Many students shared their struggles and the impact of the postponement on their lives. Dr. Pesheen Ahmad, a NEET PG 2024 candidate, expressed his frustration:
“I traveled from Delhi to Meerut to sit for this exam and was revising chapters at the hotel. There is no reason to cancel this exam, and it should have been conducted on time. Some of the aspirants had to resume their medical jobs, join a new one, or even go on a vacation with their family. The NBE failed us.”
Another candidate, who chose to remain anonymous, highlighted the compounded difficulties faced by working professionals:
“I work in UPPMS, and my father was admitted for surgery. I had left for Lucknow to appear in the exams. All of us UPPSC officers are overworked and didn’t get time to prepare for the exam, but I still managed to get some time to sit for this test. Unfortunately, such things cost us a lot of resources and human hours. We are government officers on 24×7 duties, so managing all this is very difficult.”
Criticism from Medical Faculty and Associations:
The medical faculty and various associations have also criticized the decision. Dr. Suvrankar Datta, Vice President of RDA AIIMS, called the postponement “harassment of all the doctors” and questioned the government’s competence:
“How can the government be so incompetent in managing an exam that was planned months in advance? This is beyond frustrating and unacceptable. The ministry owes us a detailed explanation and immediate rescheduling.”
The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) also questioned the repeated changes in the exam schedule. NEET PG 2024 was initially announced for March 3, then postponed to July 7, and later to June 23 before this latest postponement.
The Ministry of Health has agreed to notify the public in advance of a new date for the NEET PG 2024 exam. However, medical students have suffered greatly due to this postponement. The community demands a fairer and more reliable assessment process while they await further details.
